Take Them With You: Why Pets Matter When Escaping Abuse

When someone gathers the strength to leave a domestic or sexual violence situation, they are not just making a decision to survive—they’re choosing to reclaim their future. But for many survivors, one heartbreaking question can stop the plan in its tracks: What about my pet?

At Violence Free Futures, we understand that pets are more than companions. They are part of the family. They offer comfort, connection, and unconditional love during times when safety and trust are hard to find. That’s why we’re proud to say: you never have to leave your pet behind.

Thanks to a generous grant from Red Rover, we can offer a small on-site pet shelter. This is a safe, secure, and loving space where your pet can stay with you as you begin your healing journey.

Why This Matters

Abusers often use pets as tools of control—threatening, harming, or withholding them to keep survivors from leaving. Studies show:

  • Up to 71% of pet-owning survivors say their abuser threatened, harmed, or killed a pet.
  • Nearly half of survivors delay leaving because they can’t find safe options for their pets.
  • Fewer than 1 in 5 shelters nationwide accommodate pets on-site.

We believe that no one should have to choose between their safety and the safety of a beloved animal. Your pet is part of your support system—and part of your future.

What We Offer

Our in-house pet shelter allows survivors to bring their pets with them to our safe housing campus. Whether you have a dog, cat, or other companion animal, we provide a secure and nurturing environment for your pet while you get the support you need.

We feel blessed to have this resource. Violence Free Futures is one of the few agencies in Ohio offering this level of care and inclusion.
